Lhasa has many temples and monasteries, and you may find yourself overwhelmed by many options. When this happens, I always give in the initial application of the nomad in me and start on my feet. One step at a time and you will soon find them amidst a cacophony of sound and compelling perspective.
However, if you want to explore the trailing edge of Lhasa for a goal after another, the Barkhor Street is the best starting point for exploration.
Experience the song and the singing of the pilgrims along this famous street in Tibet and nearby are selling goods of local crafts and works of art offered for sale. You will also find them surrounded by travelers from around the world to join the pilgrims in prayer or haggle with vendors at a better price. Head of the side streets and a look of lamas, or revered teacher to instruct their students in many small chapels, you will find along the path.
Not far from the bustling Barkhor the Jokhang Temple is the year 647 AD. This temple is considered the spiritual center of Tibet. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims pay homage to this temple every year. The temple is also an interesting place to explore different architectural styles with designs not only for Tibet but also the neighboring countries of China and Nepal. Do not miss the opportunity to leave their homes at three levels for a breathtaking view of the bustling Barkhor Street and the majestic Potala palace dominates the skyline in the distance from Lhasa.
It is a majestic structure not only because of its huge size, but also for its great historical and spiritual. This 13-story structure with approximately 1,000 rooms was once the residence of the Dalai Lama. It stops over 50 years in the palace, which began in 1645.
To the west, Drepung, the biggest and largest of all monasteries in Tibet, while the north is debating the Sera Monastery, home of the famous Buddhist monks.
Finally see the beautiful lake Yamdrok Tso, crystalline waters are considered sacred by Buddhist pilgrims. Follow the footsteps of millions of pilgrims who visited once this mystic lake to reflect and seek clarification on important decisions of life.
